According to breastcancer.org, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer and some point in their life— which is a surprisingly large statistic. If you were to gather a group of eight of your closest friends, one of you will likely get this form of cancer which can be a frightening truth to come to grips with.
With October being breast cancer awareness month, we at UTMB Radiology know just how important it is for our patients to understand the importance and value of frequent breast examinations.
Conduct One At Home
Every woman should conduct a self-breast examination at least once a month to check for lumps or other abnormalities. When performing one of these exams, try laying flat on your back with your head on a pillow. Then, take the pads of your fingers and in a circular motion rub around your entire breast checking for any lumps or abnormalities. Repeat on both sides.
If at any time you notice any lumps or bumps, schedule an appointment with your gynecologist or family practitioner.
Get a Mammogram
Starting at the age of 40, women should be getting mammogram screenings every two years. Luckily, here at UTMB Radiology, we offer mammogram screenings for our patients. By using x-ray technology, a mammogram will check for abnormalities in the breast tissue and surrounding cells which will then alert one of our radiologists to take a closer look. As a non-invasive, pain-free procedure, a mammogram is something that can be done on your lunch break or even before work— meaning that you won’t need to use any sick leave or vacation time.
Breast cancer prevention starts with conducting regular self-breast examinations every month and getting a mammogram every two years if you are over the age of 40. Celebrate breast cancer awareness month by taking preventative measures and schedule your mammogram with our Galveston office today!
